Eczema Treatment: Do You Moisturize Properly
Adding a moisturizer to your skin at least two to three times a day is advised by experts for effective eczema treatment. However, it is important to moisturize correctly if you wish to heal the dermatitis rash, peeling and flaking, bumps and skin inflammation problems. Lubricating the skin will lock in moisture and doing this immediately after taking a shower or bath is best. When my eczema skin was most severe, moisturizing ointments such as over the counter aquaphor seemed to be a helpful emollient. If the dermatitis irritation is mild or moderate, creams and lotions that are for sensitive skin will work well.
Be careful for moisturizers on your eczema skin that contain drying agents like alcohol. Some people have allergic reactions to lanolin, so study the ingredients in the moisturizers and be sure you aren't picking a product that can aggravate your existing dermatitis condition. Coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter, virgin olive oil and coca butter are all rich for skin healing. Rub in the creams or oils well before dressing. Remember to cover areas that are harder to reach such as the bottom of your feet, back of knees and behind the elbows. Avocado is an ingredient in some moisturizers and this is useful to decrease itching.
Staying moisturized will help to decrease itching. When the skin itches, we scratch which can lead to impetigo or another infection. Be sure to cut your nails short to avoid this temptation. If your child suffers from atopic eczema or scalp eczema, explain the complications that can occur due to scratching. This will help your child be more conscious. Put a small size of moisturizer in your child's backpack for school so your child can get itch relief rather than resort to scratching. If your doctor advises a cortisone cream, don't neglect to also moisturize twice a day as an essential part of your skin's recovery process.
